DEADSPIN – Dave Mirra, BMX biker and 24-time X-Games medalist, was found this afternoon dead in his truck of an “apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound” in Greenville, North Carolina. He was 41 years old.
Greenville PD confirmed Mirra’s death on their Facebook page and issued the following statement about his death, as well as his impact on the Greenville community and the sport of BMX:
At approximately 4pm today, Greenville Police responded to the 200 block of Pinewood Road for an apparent suicide.
Upon arrival, officers discovered Dave Mirra, 41, of Greenville, sitting in a truck with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He had been visiting friends in the area a short time before the incident.
Well this sucks. Back in the golden days of extreme-sports, Dave Miraa was that dude. I had my mom buy me nothing but Haro bikes because of him and Ryan Nyquist. They went hand to hand and were both my favorite BMX riders.
Every time he was on my TV, weather he was on the X-Games or VHS bmx dirt jumping video, I’d leave the house, go grab my buddy Mark, get on our bikes and build dirt jumps for the rest of the day while we tried not to end up in the emergency room.
And lets not forget about Dave Miraa Freestyle BMX. I had my mom put that shit on pre-order the day they advertised it. Completely changed the video game. Other than Paper Boy, there really wasn’t any other groundbreaking BMX games until Dave Mirra.
Also, quick side note…Here’s the bikes I rode, in chronological order.
The Dyno NSX: Perfect for beginners.
Upgraded to the HARO Revo: Terrible for kid’s who weighed 70 pounds aka me. Fucking tank. couldn’t even pick it up, let alone do shit on it. Until I was like like 14 I really couldn’t ride the fucker.
Then we went to something lighter, faster and something I could actually do shit with. Plus I had sick powder blue Primo tires. So imagine that. The HARO AL
The last BMX bike I got before I sold out and got a car was the Nyquist Backtrail. Kind of heavy, but not as bad as my Revo.
Some kids wanted to be like Mike, which I did. But I also wanted to be like Dave. RIPDave buddy. God speed.
